Makenna was born with a rare chromosomal defect. Pages from her genetic book are missing, ripped out. The ripple effect is tremendous having her with a tracheotomy and a gastric feeding tube since birth. She's gone thru many intensive surgeries as the doctors work so hard to repair and mend the under developed organs. Every day is a fight for Makenna and her family. So many people and institutions have enabled her to make the tremendous progress she has made in such a short lifespan.

It's The Starlight Foundation that lets the family escape the day to day struggles of Makenna's chronic illness. The events they host let the family go out together, with other families facing similar struggles and not feel like everyone is staring at the young girl with a tracheotomy. Makenna and her family are afforded the grace of normalcy, even if its just for a few fleeting hours. No price is too great for that escape.
